About “Spring in the Aspen Grove”

In January 2010, I created an abstract painting with birch trees that reminded me of my times back in Germany, my home country. There aren’t many forests in the area where I live now (Dallas Metroplex) and I was missing my friends, the trees. Most of my paintings are created by memory, I have a color combination in mind or I an idea, then I start, not knowing what it will be. As soon as the oil painting takes shape, the end product is determined.

Soon after the painting was finished, my husband and I traveled to Utah (March 2010) for a snowboarding trip in Midway and Park City. On the way, we came across many beautiful birch tree forests, or at least that’s what I thought it was and I was the happiest woman that my wish for trees got fulfilled. The images seen in Midway, Utah, looked exactly like my abstract painting, it felt like a déjà-vu.

In March 2011, I painted more birch trees always thinking of our trip to Utah and this painting specifically even had a different title. I named it “Spring in the Birch Tree Forest”.

To continue the story, in November 2010, I met Louise Edington via Twitter and Facebook and we became friends. She told me that these trees reminded me of the place where she lives now, Park City, Utah, but the trees that surrounded her were aspen trees. I responded that this abstract impressionist painting was created in memory of my trip to Utah and I asked her to pick a name for it since I finally understood that I had painted aspen trees and not birch trees.

This painting is dedicated to Louise because of our connection and the story that ties us together. All my paintings have an interesting history but this one is the most special one from my collection because of our personal story.

“Spring in the Aspen Grove” was painted on primed fabric. The primer I use is made from natural ingredients: chalk, white pigments and hide glue. As a green artist, all ingredients are eco-friendly and home-made using traditional techniques. The frame is built from recycled wood and screwed on all four sides. The paint is made from natural pigments and linseed oil, the old, traditional way of mixing classic oil paint. With a palette knife, building up several layers from back to front, I combine the basic colors yellow, red and blue with white and some black.
