Where Do You Buy Your Gifts?
Posted by Franziska San Pedro on Jan 23, 2012 in Art, Blog, Marketing | 6 commentsWe all do it. I am no exception, I do it, too.
We all buy gifts. There’s only a few people on this planet who do not make gifts to others. Some gifts are free (like a smile), some are hand- or home-made but most of us actually buy them. Not all gifts are useful, pretty or thoughtful.
I got gifts in my life that actually made me more mad than anything. Yes, gifts can do that, too. Especially when I feel like the person didn’t think at all. “It’s the thought that counts” -I have to disagree (in some cases)!
And it’s not even that the person didn’t know me well enough. No, it’s especially those people who know me very well and buy things that I can’t even re-gift. What a waste. No, and I am not greedy here. One of my aunties bought a pink umbrella (for a five-year-old) when I was 16 (and in my heavy-metal-gothic-phase), that’s what I mean.
Ok, the useless gifts were just a side-note. I wanted to write about something else. So, why if we buy many of the gifts anyways, are these not from our friends -especially our artist friends?
Art is pricy (most of the times) and you would think that it’s not for everyone but let me assure you, it is! There is something for everyone. Even your Harley Davidson friend with the black leather clothes likes artful pieces. The auntie with the weird love for antique pink and her dusty quilts. The whiny and difficult 16-year-old who worships the Bieber-dude (I don’t get it either, but well). But if you do some research and give them something they love and appreciate, you’ve hit the nail!
Just recently, I gifted myself a beautiful piece of art from one of my artist friends online. The money I get for christmas usually goes on my account and is gradually spent on groceries. What the heck? Really? I don’t think it should be used this way!
So I picked those beautiful earrings from Ostlund Custom Works and gifted them for myself! My mother-in-law was very pleased that I used some of the money just for my selfish self. Now she knows that she was the one who sponsored them and every time she sees me with them, she says (smiling): “they’re from me, right?”.
Next time you make a gift: check your friend’s businesses first, I am sure someone sells something (that maybe you wouldn’t want to have but) your friend would adore!

Great choice on the earrings Franziska. They look very good on you.
This is a topic I’ll be writing about as well so I guess great minds think alike. Not necessarily just buying gifts but as business owners and if there are some things we purchase anyway, why not purchase them from our friends. Give them some business and help them out at the same time.
Great idea and I’m happy to hear that you spent that money on yourself. You sound like me, I usually use my gift money for paying bills, etc. This year I hope to buy me a laptop with my Christmas money and just so you know, we’ll finally be celebrating our Christmas this Saturday. My nephew has been off working for the past 10 months. We’ve been waiting on him to get home. Yey!

Hi Adrienne,
that’s very cool! Good idea to write about using your friends’ businesses (I do the same of course when I know they’re doing a great job -and I recommend them whenever I can!).
Merry christmas!!
I hope you’ll get to treat yourself with a new computer this year. Today, I spent some of my christmas money on a dental check and cleaning, hahaha, there goes the money to a special gift… At least my smile is a little brighter now.
Enjoy your time with your nephew, I am sure you’ll have a blast
Hugs,
Franziska
I love your earrings! Normally I buy jewelries or “women gifts” from galleries in order to know that they are unique. Of course – a bit more expensive, but totally worth it!

Thank you Anna! Ron custom made them for me, I’ve seen them on his facebook fan page and fell in love.. He only makes each style limited which makes me feel very special
I agree, the quality is so much higher and so worth it!!
Thanks for coming by,
Franziska
Thank you for mentioning me in your post! I really appreciate it! I have done the same thing and bought art for myself and have similar views about gifts. Great post!
Thanks Ron

Yes, still bragging about my earrings (and I get a lot of compliments!).
