What to Make With an Old Window Frame
Posted by Franziska San Pedro on Jan 12, 2012 in Blog, Upcycling & DIY | 10 commentsNo, I did not make a square hula hoop out of the old window frame…
I always get so excited when I drive along the streets and find stuff that screams at me “no I don’t want to end up in the landfills, rescue me!”. The ugliest things get my attention because I see their value; I would say that 80% of what most people throw away could be reused, up- or recycled in some way. And here’s what I did with an old window frame…
This is how the frame looked when I picked it up at the street:

I sanded it lightly but I wanted to keep the used look.
Then I measured the frame and cut out plywood:

Attach cardboard for extra thickness:

Check if it fits inside the frame:

Attach pillow filling or some kind of foam:

Place ribbons on top and staple on the other side, attach fabric on the backside:

Attach triangles on all four corners:

Attach cord to window frame on both sides:

Staple ribbons at the overlap and add tacks:

And here it is: a new pin board made out of an old window frame!

This beauty is going to Third Monday Trade Days with me this weekend to find a new owner! It’s a monthly flea/antique market where I go and sell my treasures. If you’re nearby come and visit me at lot #245.
..and should you have old window frames, don’t throw them away, there is someone out there who can still use it!!

I wouldnt have even looked twiec at that, I would have driven past it.
Did you look at it and think that you would make something out of it, take it and them come up with something or did you see it and realise what could be done with it right away? I would like to know how your mind worked on this one!

Hi Claire,
It’s interesting how our minds work so differently. When I see something, I usually see the value of an object (even trash) and then I think about what I could make with it. I saw the frame between all kinds of junk and I turned my car and picked it up -hardly fit into my small car
So that’s how I work, always need some inspiration and then ideas will come!

I love that Franziska and that’s exactly something I need. I would have never thought about that either but you know what, I’m going to put my brother to work on something like that for me. He would have that up in nothing flat.
Thanks for sharing this, love the finished piece.

Hi Franziska! It’s adorable – am I allowed to say that? A great idea. I did the same thing with a really big old frame. And, was thinking I needed another one. I like your little corners – you could put anything in there with the help of these.
It’s going on my list! (I noticed I have 3 of these and not just one – oh my!)
ps – love your new photo!

oh and I got those lists too, hahaha!! Eventually they’ll get done, it’s all about timing
You are so crazy creative, Franziska!! Love the new pin board! I don’t have the artistic vision you have & would have driven right past this discarded treasure. Your talent never ceases to amaze me…

Thanks Heidi (and Atti spirit), you are so sweet
Had so much fun building it, looking for a potential pin-board lover now, hahaha!! Didn’t sell it at the last market but I’m sure I will soon.

I like your creativity on recycling old materials. I would have thrown that window pane if it was me. I will try to make my creative works also with the trashes at home. I might come up with something cool like this one. Thanks for the idea.
